Many people choose to engage in very risky and dangerous activities---because they regard such challenges and excitement as preferable to the dullness of safety. Many people hunger for tension and conflict, rather than for relaxation and harmony. There can even be tension between people who seek to promote tension and conflict on the one hand---and others who seek to promote relaxation and harmony on the other. Those who seek to promote tension and conflict thus have an advantage, because their efforts automatically create tension and conflict between the two groups. When we have experienced the excitement of a growth experience---we may seek to repeat it to enjoy it again. We like to repeat those things which we enjoyed the first time. Growth experiences cannot be repeated again as new experiences in just the same way they happened the first time; for the second time can not be just like the first time. The second time can not offer the excitement of uncertainty, mystery, wonder, surprise, risk, etc. which the first time did. It is thus futile to return time and again to try to repeat a growth experience---for the satisfaction which it occasioned the first time. These observations are relevant to growth in intellectual, cognitive, athletic, affective, sexual, sensory, perceptual, spiritual, and other domains and relationships. We need to recognize our own need and the need of others for challenge, excitement, surprises, stimulation, wonder, mystery, and growth---and for balance with respect to kinds, occasions, timing, amount, etc. We need realism about what is possible, and a willingness to believe that more may be possible than we have felt free to imagine. It is exciting to become free of collusions which imprison our imagination---because collusions create risk and a superficial kind of mystery which depends heavily upon ignorance. We need to take care not to be overwhelmed by powers which would destroy us---while we are seeking the pleasures which are occasioned by newness which is so great as to overwhelm us in ways which promote humane growth.
