You may thus recognize that which is good by how rapidly it grows. The good business is the business with the high rate of growth of annual sales. The good state-fair is the one at which attendance figures each year break all time records. The good school is the one at which enrollments are larger each year than the previous year. The good library has a collection of books which get larger each year. To fail to grow is a sign of inadequacy. To merit respect and affirmation one must work to promote growth. If one is associated with an enterprise which is growing---one is associate with that which is good, and so one merits respect and affirmation. It is growth which is good, not quality. You may judge quality by whether or not there is growth. You may judge growth only quantitatively, not qualitatively. Only that which may be quantified may be good, for only that which can be quantified can be discovered to be growing bigger, and therefore better. That which is only qualitative and which does not yield to quantification--- can not merit respect and affirmation. People who do not yield to quantification and do not identify themselves with that which yields to quantification---can not prove themselves to merit respect and affirmation. They live in the terribly ambiguous world of qualitative uncertainties. They can not prove themselves by demonstrable objective growth. Since only objectively verifiable growth is good, people who seek respect and affirmation must become objectified and deal with objective realities which can grow; e.g., land, minerals, water, fuel, gold, silver, and the like. Such realities may be accumulated, possessed, and consumed in increasing amounts---in proof of how much one merits respect and affirmation. Those who witness such growth processes can not help but be impressed, and want to share in the high standard of living which is enjoyed by those who have so much and are getting more of so much each year. The most successful will go to heaven where they will enjoy quantitative growth forever. Would anything else be heaven to them? (c) 2005 by Paul A.
