It is important to recognize who is the active agent in professional student identification. Sometimes the professors regard themselves as the active agent; they think of themselves as identifying the future professionals of their discipline---choosing those who merit inclusion. There is some truth in that. On the other hand such identification by professionals is impotent without the students themselves personally identifying with the profession and its professionals. To be chosen unwillingly will lead to naught. Yet to admit that futility will only rub salt in the wound of the reality that it is the students who make the most significant identification. The important professional student identification is the deep personal identification which students make with a profession and its professionals. Their sense of identify is thereby created. If the professionals do not choose a student with such a sense of identity---it is probably because such a student is challenging the traditions, collusions, injustices, absurdities, etc. of the profession. If the students' sense of personal identity with the profession is strong enough---the failure of the professionals to identify with the student will not inhibit the student's professional activities, inside or outside the formal circles of the profession. The excommunicated professional may lead a life of frustration, yet have great impact on the profession by putting it into a clear public light---which reveals its self-serving unjust practices. When there is mutual personal bonding between magical children and established professionals---then the professions become transformed. There is a shaking of the foundations of professional collusions---as the magical children ask new questions and the professionals take those new questions seriously---because they are bonded to the magical children whom they respect as persons, rather than as exemplars of technical professional competence. Within such bonds both children and adults are educated and grow to higher levels of maturity---which are not imaginable to professionals who are bonded only to their professional concerns, questions, equipment, techniques, knowledge, etc. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
