It is risky to be openly nonconformist. in a conformist culture. Those who are afraid to be openly nonconformist can promote the growth of the culture by giving support and encouragement to those who have gone public in their beliefs and actions, and are openly nonconformist in a way which merits support. If there is no quiet encouragement---those who take the risk of public nonconformity will be violated, and others will be unwilling to follow in their steps. Conformists are likely to regard the purpose of nonconformity to be to insult conformists. For this reason conformists are unable to see value in nonconformity. How can you affirm other people whose purpose it is to insult you? If the purpose of others' nonconformity is to insult you, you can not imagine there being any value in that nonconformity. In you perception there is no value in the nonconformity apart from its symbolic value in insulting you---and that is a negative value to you. Conformists are likely to perceive nonconformity as symbolic action which has no utility to the nonconformists, apart from its utility as a means to insult you. Conformists usually are much clearer and definite in what they support than are nonconformists. Conformists regard the lack of clarity and the ambiguity of many nonconformists as a sign that the nonconformists do not have worthy values; they are confused. The conformists who thus view nonconformists---do not have worthy values; they are confused. The conformists call upon nonconformists to abandon their futile misdirected efforts and do what is so obviously proper. The conformists might be able to understand differences in views about what should be the standards to which people should conform, but to imagine living in ways which transcend conformity may be too much for their imagination. We can not reasonably expect conformists to be supportive of people who seek to transcend the conformists' search for the proper standards for conformist behavior. Thus profound nonconformists need each other's tacit as well as public support and encouragement if profound nonconformists are to survive with in a conformist culture. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
