To accept a misleading question is misleading, regarding of what answer is given to the misleading question. Misleading questions require the respondent to accept misleading suppositions upon which all responses to the misleading question must be based. What color is God? To say that God is a white man may offend black men, and the black men disagree and answer the misleading question by saying that God is a black man. Feminists may reject the initial misleading question and content that God is not a man, regardless of what color God is. They may then ask the misleading question, "What sex is God?" Women may be inclined to respond to that misleading question by saying that God is a woman. They are then still the victims of the presuppositions upon which the question is based. Thus we can not answer misleading questions without being misleading. Rebellious adolescents often rebel by affirming contradictory answers to misleading questions. If parents/society have affirmed one answer to a misleading question the adolescent may affirm a contradictory answer to the same misleading question. Cultural pendulums often swing back and forth between contradictory answers to misleading questions. Swings from permissive to strict discipline are one example. Emphasis upon "basic skills" such as reading, writing, and arithmetic versus emphasis upon social maturity are another example from our school systems. Peace through the techniques of military might versus peace through the techniques of diplomacy is an example from international affairs. The most helpful response to a misleading question is to reveal the misleading presuppositions upon which it is based, and which it demands be present in all responses to the question. Then is may be possible to ask a question which is not based upon misleading presuppositions---or perhaps to respond to the present situation in a way which transcends asking questions. Sometimes it may be misleading to respond to a situation by asking any question, especially a question which presupposes only verbal responses and rejects non-verbal responses. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
