What is real to one of us is not real to another, and vice versa. Values depend upon what is real. Expectations depend upon what is real, so therefore do fulfillments of expectations. Guilt is occasioned by rejection upon failing to fulfill expectations. Such failure and rejection may be occasioned by incongruities with regards to what is real to participants in the guilt relationships. Expectations may be incongruous with the reality in terms of which we are operating and so not be fulfilled. If we expect in terms of one make of perceiving reality and operate in terms of an incongruous mode we will most likely fail the fulfill the expectations. If we expect/require rejection as the consequence of failing to fulfill expectations then guilt will most likely to generated. We may expect that guilt will be helpful to us and to others. Whether it will or will not be helpful will depend upon the reality in terms of which we define helpful and the reality in terms of which guilt is operational. We may generate destructive guilt in others in whose reality guilt is destructive. Whether or not guilt is helpful or not depends upon what problem it is expected to solve. If guilt is intended to promote conformity to prescribed "good" behavior it may in the short run prove successful---and be judged helpful in terms of short-term when judged in terms of non-conformist realities characteristic of ancient human roots in pre- historical heritage. The complexities of inter-personal relationships are occasioned in part by the complexities of the diverse realities which dominate our varied lives. To understand our misunderstandings we must become more sensitive to the diversities in what is real to us. Much of our guilt originates in our failure to consider our diversity and recognize that it is really real, not just a failure on our part to conform to some transcendentally defined standards of what we should be like. Much of our guilt would be reduced by seriously accepting our wonderful differences. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
