The focus of habitual affirmation tends to grow. This is true of all living creatures and aspects of creatures. A habitual imbalance in a pattern of negation/affirmation will tend to generate an unbalanced creature or community. Such an imbalance tends to generate a lack of integrity which is in turn manifested in unbalanced behavior. Such unbalanced behavior generates violence in the form of unbalanced negation/affirmation---and forms a vicious cycle which is destructive of all forms of life. In the extreme, an imbalance in negation/affirmation perverts human perception to the point that the resultant violence is affirmed and the cessation of such violence is negated; at the perceptual level. It becomes impossible to perceive the violence as some reality for which negation would be appropriate. Negation/affirmation are real in contextual terms. Behavior which might be affirmation in one context may constitute negation in another context, and vice versa. It is not the behavior alone which constitute affirmation/negation---but the relationship between the behavior and the context of the behavior. No set of principles, rules, laws, policies, or the like can adequately specify what will constitute affirmation/negation in advance. Such formal representations are inadequate to the job of anticipating what will constitute negation/affirmation in a future context. Formal representations embody only limited aspects of a whole context, and often fail to embody those aspects most relevant to negation/affirmation. The language of formal representations tend to generate biases in regards to affirmation/negations. An attempt to affirm a reality with an inappropriate language---may occasion a covert negation of that reality. An attempt to negate another reality with an inappropriate language---may occasion a covert affirmation of that reality. The affirmation/negation may be implicit in the choice of language---quite apart from the content of the communication. Thus, it is essential to recognize which languages are appropriate within which reality contexts. It is impossible to helpfully affirm/negate alternative realities without appropriate choices of languages. It is impossible to transcend inappropriate affirmations/negations without transcending inappropriate choices of formal languages and/or informal languages. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
