Even as we seek to analyze them we may affirm them. As we seek to understand dichotomies in an objective way---we affirm the dichotomy between subjectivity and objectivity. Even as we try to understand through analysis---we affirm the dichotomy between holistic and analytic approaches to life. As we seek consensus regarding the nature of dichotomies---we affirm the dichotomy between divergent and consensual perspectives. When we describe dichotomies through formal language---we affirm the dichotomy between intuitive understanding and formal understanding---which is formulated through symbolic representations. Our efforts to transcend dichotomies affirm the dichotomy between accepting ourselves as we are, and trying to transcend our limited natures. We may be offended by a person whose life transcends a dichotomy which we affirm through our effort to transcend it. The transcendent life may bother us because it does not affirm the importance of our dichotomous values. We may value either or both poles of the dichotomy with ultimate concern---and thereby occasion the tension within us. Even as we recognize that origin of the tension which we may seek to transcend---we may affirm the values which occasion the conflict within us. We may also be disturbed by people who do not affirm the values which occasion the conflict within us. The dichotomy is internalized. It is occasioned by internalized values. People who do not affirm those internalized values may offend us---even after we have recognized the values which occasion our dichotomy, and that they are internally in conflict. Such recognitions may be more intellectual than affective, and an intellectual recognition does not necessarily affect our affective response pattern. Our affective response patterns may continue to affirm the values which occasion our internalized conflict. We may be able to transcend our dichotomy only by accepting as role models and loving those persons who act in transcendence of our dichotomy---and thereby offend us. It will not be easy!
