Some scientists are self-defensive regarding caricatures of scientists as peculiar. They thereby reveal their own emotional insecurity. Observations that scientists are peculiar usually points in one way or another to the fact that they are not in meaningful dialogue with people who are unlike them; they lack diversity in communication skills. Recognizing the ultimate importance of communication is central to an understanding of the social implications of scientists' values. Thus, it is essential to understand the phenomena of scientists being peculiar in terms of the ways in which they are, and are not, in meaningful dialogue with people who are significantly different from scientists. We need to consider the differences between the: motivation, world-views, self- conceptions, vocabularies, role-models, ultimate concerns, and the channels of communication of scientists---compared to now scientists. To begin, it is essential to ask how important most scientists consider dialogue with non-scientists to be. If they consider it unimportant, they are unlikely to take the time to develop such dialogue. Developing meaningful two-way communication is time consuming and emotionally demanding, especially when there are basic differences between the people involved-scientists on the one hand and non-scientists on the other. The effort is not likely to be made, unless dialogue is regarded as more important than other concerns. Thus, it is essential to identify scientists' priorities, their ultimate concerns. Then we must ask: "How highly do they value dialogue with people who are fundamentally different from them?" In explicit terms: "What scientific values are they willing to "compromise" to be in dialogue? What scientific values stand in the way of meaningful dialogue?" (c) 2005 by Paul A.
