Such defensive moves are not as obvious as objective emotional expressions which tend to be offensive in character and effect. Emotional defensive moves tend to be subjective in character, and so are not open to objective examination. The defensive moves are likely to be concealed from those who occasioned them, and are likely to be kept secret from most everybody. Even the person engaged in emotionally defensive moves may not be conscious of the nature of those moves---they being designed and executed without conscious intent, decision, or planning. One kind of defensive move consists of emotional disengagement. When you are emotionally engaged you tend to be very vulnerable. Emotional disengagement tends to reduce emotional vulnerability; by indifference, callousness, repression of commitments, forgetfulness, etc. People may enter into collusions to protect themselves and each other against emotional pain. They may enter into games of mutual self-deception to avoid the pain of subjective consciousness---and through joint effort be more successful than were they to attempt emotional defensiveness singly. Playing traditional stereotyped roles is another way to create emotional defenses. Conventional role playing tends to reduce emotional sensitivity---because responses are defined by conventions, rather than revealing of the real self. Thus traditions and conventions tend to promote the conservation of emotions---and so the reduction of emotional vitality; emotional conservation does sustain emotional vitality. Resort to legalistic life styles is another type of emotional defensiveness. It is a formalization of traditional/conventional living---making mandatory what might otherwise by merely traditional/conventional. Since legalistic rules cannot successfully occasion emotional honesty (while mandating the playing of humane roles) legalistic rules tend to promote emotional defensiveness against the hurt of emotional dishonesty.
