The formulator of the message may have different meanings associated with the words/phrases used than does the recipient. Both formulator and recipient may be unable to conceive of other meanings, and find it unthinkable to associate any other meanings. If such is the case there is bound to be intellectual misunderstanding in that the formulated meaning will not be the same as the meaning which is received. This misunderstanding may exist just at the intellectual/rational level. Such misunderstandings may be resolved through intellectual/rational processes which uncover the differences in meanings which the participants associate with the verbal symbols. In most verbal communities there are non-verbal symbols which communicate non-intellectual/non-rational meaning. Such symbols are embodied in eye contact, eye avoidance, eye motion, facial expressions, body posture, body motions, unfulfilled expectations, affectionate actions, dis-affectionate actions, etc. In a sense there is also non-verbal communication buried "between the lines" of verbal communication. With all such non-verbal symbols there is the same risk of mis-interpretation as in the case of verbal symbols, words. The formulator of a message may use such non-verbal symbols with the intent to convey one meaning, and the recipient may interpret the non-verbal symbols as conveying a quiet different meaning. Both participants may be absolutely confident that they have a common understanding of the meanings of all verbal and non-verbal symbols used. They may be in reality in total agreement---yet find themselves in violent disagreement due to their inconceivable differences regarding the significance of both verbal and non-verbal symbols. Arguments as to the "correct" significance of symbols will not be helpful. The practical implications of most communications pertain more to the affective overtones than to the intellectual/rational content. Meaningful human dialogue tends to be undermined by a failure to recognize this existential fact of life. Mutual awareness and mutual understanding depend upon transcending such blockages.
