A community in which no person would have any need to keep anything secret, but would not be compelled to sacrifice desired privacy. Shame would be an unknown; for mistakes, errors, failures, blunders, and the like would not be defined to be occasions for shame. Taboos would not be found---for taboos lead to needs to keep secrets. There would be no inclination to punish--- for secrecy is a means of avoiding punishments. There would be no elitist groups---for secrecy is a means to maintaining the appearance of qualification for membership in elitist groups. There would be few lonely people, for often loneliness flows form falling into secretive patterns of self-defense. There would not be any friendships strained by the need for secrecy about the friendship, because no friendships would be regarded as illicit. There would be no moments of embarrassment when people foolishly brought up forbidden topics of conversation, because there would be no forbidden topics to promote secrecy. Students would learn quickly because they could be open about what they did not understand and could not do. Students could admit their mistakes and ask for help in profiting from the experience of having made a mistake. Teachers could learn from their students because they would have no need to appear to be in conformity with some standard ideal form of a teacher. Students would be free to tell their teachers what their needs were---affective as well as cognitive. Teachers would be aware of factors which were inhibiting their students' growth and development, and could take steps to minimize such inhibitions---for they would not have to pretend that the inhibitions did not exist. Crime as we know it would not be common in such an open society, for people's needs would be met in the normal course of daily intercourse. Violations of the social conventions would not be required for people to meet their basic needs for food, shelter, clothing, health, recreation, learning, growth, change, personal affirmations, affection, self-confidence, privacy, freedom, etc. People's needs could be openly made known and ways found to do the best possible job of meeting all known needs. Individuals would not have to play games of mutual self deception in competitive efforts to win at others' expense. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
