If they do not declare their independence from their formative others, they will be little more than a re-play of their childhood --- acting out the roles they observed as children. Rebel action is essential until the adolescent experiences affirmations of the unique self and the power of self-affirmation. Rebellion must be directed towards some object. The adolescent thus needs something, somebody, some-power--- against which to rebel. The absence of an object of rebellion will occasion the creation/appropriation of an object to serve that role---whether reasonable or not. The essence of the rebellion is not the denial of the object of the rebellion---but the search for the affirmation of a unique personal identity. Often rebellion is directed against authority and/or symbols of authority. The usual reaction is a reaffirmation of the authority and a denial of the propriety of the rebellion. That denial robs the adolescent of the needed affirmation of a unique personal identity---and the rebellion continues. The battle between authority and the adolescent will continue futility unless the essence of the rebellion is recognized and the unique person is affirmed. This will not occur if authority, traditions, legalism, etc. are regarded as of ultimate importance. The rebellion will be fulfilled only by the acceptance of the adolescent's need for unique affirmation. When the rebellion is fulfilled adult behavior may develop. Adolescent rebellion protects each society against outdated ways. A society that preserves all traditional ways will not be flexible enough to deal with major environmental changes. Rebellious adolescents are more likely to recognize environmental changes and respond in creative new ways which are wisely adaptive. Their need to rebel is an expression of the species need to be adaptive. Attempts to stifle, rather than fulfill, their need will thus be unwise. Ways should be sought to fulfill adolescent's needs for rebellion --- while at the same time helping them recognize whatever values there may remain in traditional ways. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
