Those who belong in certain categories are automatically excommunicated. An essential aspect of some categories is excommunication. Classification into such categories is one with excommunication --- without further thought. Such classifications give consideration to only the most superficial aspects of a person or the person's situation. The existence of the terminology, classification, words, vocabulary, definitions, etc. often occasion their excommunicative usage. The terminology makes the reality---including the excommunications. In the absence of the terminology there would not be the occasion to execute the excommunications. Each culture has its own excommunicative terminology, but the following terms have often been included: Adulterer, fornicator, homosexual, lesbians masturbator, drunkard, thief, murderer, prostitute, rapist, infidel, unbeliever, gambler, card player, smoker, dancer, pacifist, militarist, etc. The thoughtless use of excommunicative terminology occasions sin, the condition of excommunication. Classifying people according to technical terminology is rarely a loving act, and so is rarely helpful. So long as the terminology is respected there are respectable people who will thoughtlessly make us of it, and excommunicate people who are in need of love, in need of being in communication. Excommunication does not help them behave more responsibly, and knowing into which category they can be fit does not help anyone cope with their problems. These considerations suggest the need to give a critical look at the us respected definitions of excommunicative terms. The language we use may need to be designed differently---lest it lead us to act foolishly. We can design it differently by the way we use the terms --- disavowing excommunication in our usage so that excommunication ceases to be an automatic implication within the term and its usage. Such disavowal may well be most powerful if it takes non-verbal forms concurrent with the use of verbal terms. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
