Actions which undermine people's confidence in in appropriate ways thus occasion failures, even when success is possible; e.g., the stern application of high standards of performance usually undermines the confidence of all but the most gifted and motivated students---and so occasions the failures of many to fulfill their potentials for success. Confidence may pertain to the propriety of a venture, project, course of study, personal relationship, or sexual relationship. Confidence may also pertain to the desirability, practicality, value, or ultimate worth of the same. Confidence may pertain to personal ability, luck, fortune, destiny, chances of success. Failure is often occasioned by somebody undermining another person's confidence---by casting doubt upon propriety, worth, or chances of success. The ambiguity thus generated undermines confidence, motivation, and guidance--- occasioning a listless drifting which fails to accomplish anything of value through a lack of integrity. People of integrity maintain confidence in the propriety, worth, and chances of success---of their ventures, projects, courses of study, personal relationships, and sexual relationships. Humane confidence is rooted in meaningful personal relationships which bring pleasure and fulfillment to those involved. When children do not find pleasure, fulfillment, and meaning in their personal lives---they are likely to turn to inhumane ventures, projects, courses of study, personal relationships, and sexual relationships. They are usually able to copy or invent ways to be successful, and therefore self-confident. If their confidence in humane relationships is undermined, they seek confidence in inhumane relationships and activities. This often means turning away from humane subjective considerations and becoming more exclusively focused in on objective technical considerations---whereby people are treated objectively, as objects. Such turnings lead the way to failures to be humane, and so failures to find meaning and fulfillment. Confidence in the ultimate worth of living is thus lost. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
