Underneath their apparent mutual understanding may lurk a profound dichotomy of meaning. At a more evident level there are disagreements about the correctness, truth, significance, meaning, worth, relevance, importance, etc. of communications characteristic to one mode of consciousness---but misunderstood by persons in the complementary mode of consciousness. Those in disagreement are weakly aware of the degree to which their differing modes of consciousness occasion their difficulties, including conflict and violence originating in misunderstandings. Prayer, poetry, songs of praise, meditations, statements of faith, love-songs, etc. are communications of quite a different mode of consciousness---than are quantitative statements, laws, commands, rational statements, symbolic logic, analytic expositions, etc. To approach communications of one mode---while in a complimentary state of consciousness---is inappropriate and likely to generate misperceptions. In non-specialized communications there is a tendency to mix the two modes of communication. This is especially important in political communications where political leadership involves appeal to both emotions and facts. A failure to synthesize both emotional and factual communication leads to political failure---through not getting elected, or not dealing responsibly with the issues of allocation of scarce resources to meet human needs. To the political leader the transcendence of the two culture dichotomy is thus a very practical concern. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
