Their essence is process, rather than any static factor. The musician is not seeking the find the ideal note. The dancer is not seeking to ideal posture. Rhythm does not focus upon finding the ideal length of time to hold a note or to rest, to hold a posture, or to move. In rhythm, music and dance --- fulfillment is associated with continually changing patterns of beats, notes, postures, and motion. In rhythm, music and dance an essential feature is continual interaction between participants who each contribute uniquely within the whole. The interaction is an essential part of the whole. The whole cannot be understood as a sum of the parts apart from the role of the dynamic process of interaction between the parts within the whole. The nature of the interactions depend in part upon the whole within which they occur. The whole cannot be understood fully --- if it is seen only as the consequence of the interactions between the constituent parts, in the absence of the whole. The whole contributes to its own creation, just as do the constituent parts. Verbal structures often lack the dynamic features found in rhythm, music and dance. Conversations often degenerate into a sequence of monologues which have no rhythm, tone, key, interaction or coherent structure. Religious doctrines tend to become static and as uninteresting as a frozen rhythm band, orchestra, or ballet troupe. Legal structures tend towards rigidity, because of the importance placed upon precedence. Rationalists need to attend to rhythm, music and dance --- to gain some insights regarding what features of life are absent from their daily activities. They need to avoid the temptation to think that unless a truth can be communicated verbally, it is unimportant. There are many important communications which are not verbal, and which can not be meaningfully translated into verbal language. Some of these are communicated through rhythm, music and dance. Such communications can enliven verbal communication, even though they cannot be translated into verbal communication. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
