It is not in the interest of the community as a whole to expect of children what may reasonably be expected of mature adults. It is reasonable to expect that children will seek to grow physically, intellectually, emotionally and spiritually -- - with due regard for other persons' rights. The rights which are granted to children are intended to promote such growth to maturity and to full ability to contribute to the long-range welfare of the total community. Many persons of mature age are immature physically intellectually, emotionally and/or spiritually. What rights should such immature people be granted in consideration of their immaturity? Clearly they should be granted such rights as are essential to their growth to maturity, full productivity and the ability to contribute to the welfare of the community. The rights which they are granted should not encourage continuation of immaturity, nor should they cost unduly to those who have grown to maturity. The people who make the effort to achieve maturity should not be unjustly penalized in granting rights to those who did not make the effort to achieve maturity. To so penalize the mature is to discourage maturation --- and so compound the problem. A wise solution to a problem will not make the problem grow worse. Penalizing the mature to protect the immature from the need to mature---is not a wise solution to the problem occasioned by the presence in society of immature people. Emotionally immature people are often offended by the behavior of emotionally mature people. The immature are troubled by an awareness of emotional relationships entered into by emotionally mature people. In an effort to avoid such troubling awareness some members of the society may seek to forbid the kinds of mature relationships which trouble the emotionally immature people. Such efforts to protect the emotionally immature will not be wise --- because they will tend to undermine adults emotional growth and compound the problem that the efforts were intended to solve. The long-term welfare of the total community must be carefully considered in attempting to grant rights to emotionally immature people. The rights of emotionally mature people must at the same time be given high priority if unwise solutions are to be avoided. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
