In some instances the frustration is immediate in relation to present possibilities for sexual fulfillment. In other instances the frustration originates in inadequate affectionate experiences during infancy, childhood, and adolescence--- leaving scars of inadequate role-models and the repression of outgoing instincts. In any case the frustration originates in the inability to cope with the tension between essential instinctive desires for giving and receiving love on the one hand, and circumstances, background, and social pressures which block that giving and receiving. The person who has not been helped to develop the maturity to cope with that tension will often release it through violent intimacy---rather than through healthy sexual intimacy. The intimacy of violence is chosen in preference to the sin of separation and indifference. In a tragic way the immature effort at communication tends to block future communication. Those who attempt to deal with the tragedy in technical ways--- compound the tragedy. Legalistic procedures and prisons only intensify the sexual frustrations which fueled the violence. The natural consequence is intensified violence, in the form of homosexuality and prison riots. It is difficult to determine how much of human violence can be traced meaningfully to sexual frustration. It is probably a much larger fraction than any sexually up-tight society will be willing to admit. The fraction is probably large enough that it is irrelevant to determine just how large it is. Our responsibility to take steps to minimize sexual frustrations and people's inability to cope meaningfully with them is only weakly dependent upon the exact value of that fraction. One only has to consider the frequency of sex related violence to become overwhelmed with the scope of the responsibility: rapes, rape-murders, child-molestations and related murders, husband/wife murders, spouse desertions, violent divorces, sexual blackmail, marital arguments, child- beatings, infidelity, violations of sexual non- conformists, violations of nude models and prostitutes, economic violence associated with pornography, crime financed through the sex trade, sexual alienation of institutionalized persons and soldiers, military rape, the violence of war, and war preparations.
