They are more like I-It relationships. Such relationships do not involve as much meaning, risk, involvement, trust, vulnerability, fulfillment, suffering, sensuality, or spiritual intimacy---as do mature sexual relationships. There are no grounds for making casual sexual relationships in and of themselves illegal. Legal procedures are impotent to help participants in casual sex develop more mature sexual relationships. Participants in casual sex may therein find more fulfillment, meaning, and humane pleasure than they find in any other way. Their relationships may be mutual, reciprocal. That others find fuller satisfaction and fulfillment in deeper and more permanent involvements should not detract from the satisfaction and fulfillment formed by participants in casual sexual relationships which are non-violent and mutual. Those who have found ways to fuller satisfaction should offer to help those who have not. To be helpful such leading must be positive in motivation and method. They may be most helpful by working to provide positive role models of sexual maturity and fulfillment. Taking actions to attempt to repress immature sexual behavior will promote sexual immaturity in tragically many situation. Participants in casual sexual relationships are not free of responsibility. They have responsibility to treat each other with respect, consideration, love, and kindness; and to avoid creating avoidable burdens for others. The latter does not mean that emotional immaturity on the part of others---involving attempts to repress responsible casual sex---should prevent private sexual relationships which promote the fulfillment of those involved. In a possessive and competitive society casual sexual relationships may occasion problems by challenging inappropriate possessiveness and thus stimulating violent competition. We all have a responsibility to work to transcend personal possessiveness and violent competition. Only as we learn to do so will we become free to mature in our sexual relationships with our closest friends. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
