It is the human condition. Having to make many choices is wearing. It is easier to have your choices limited to a few. Thus constraints on our freedom to make choices---are welcomed constraints in many instances. They are welcome even when they prevent us from doing some of the things we most want to do. This is so because the fear of total freedom is very great, and so great sacrifices will be made to avoid total freedom. Dictators take advantage of the human condition of fearing freedom. They limit human freedom bit by bit. People rarely protest the loss of just a bit of freedom at a time. A freedom which is usually lost first is the freedom to publicly express unconventional and/or disturbing facts, principles, opinion, ideals, and fantasies. They are defined to be unbecoming, distasteful, inconsiderate, immoral, impolite; if not outright false and/or illegal--- the latter usually after the former. The inhibition of free expression occurs informally. The acts which cause the inhibition tend to be subtle, beyond the reach of formal legal and judicial procedures. Such acts are often not recognized as violent, because they perform the desired service of narrowing freedom to manageable proportions. People who fall into a routine cease to live---in proportion as all of their actions become routine. When all their actions are routine, they no longer have any freedom or life. They are no longer making choices, exercising freedom. Their pattern may have originated with others, or within themselves. Their pattern of behavior may have been chosen freely, or been imposed. In any case, when all actions are just part of a pattern, a routine, then there is no freedom nor any life. Love shakes the foundations of routine and creates a new being which has the courage to be constantly renewed. With such courage, the fear of freedom no longer dominates the self. Alternatives may be openly considered and choices made according to unique situations, rather than have behaviors follow traditional patterns in a routine which repeats day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year. Love casts out fear and permits people to be themselves. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
