If you feel that you own yourself, and that yourself is all that you ultimately have---then what sense does it make to give yourself away? What will you have left? If possession implies the right to control the possession, what sense does it make to give that right to another person? Who wants to be owned by another person, to be a slave? What can possibly be given in return for yourself to make the transaction a profitable one? The profit motive thus inhibits giving yourself to anyone. Some consider giving yourself to another to be a profitable transaction if they gain control of another person in return, especially if the person to be controlled is highly valued. In such arrangements two people exchange rights of possession and control over each other. Some marriages are of this nature. Such closed marriages are not grounded in love; they are stuck in possessiveness. The risks involved in giving yourself are particularly great if you are technically oriented. For then you are likely to be individualistic and manipulative in personal relations, and the thought of letting another person control yourself is threatening. You will not be likely to trust any other person with such rights. These considerations thus prompt alienation, the state sometimes called sin. To overcome sin we need to transcend the possessive orientation of our society. Then giving yourself can be a mutual opening up of self to self in revelation of self--- giving without possessiveness, control, or loss. In such giving, what is given is not thereby lost to self. It is increased in the giving; not however in quantity--- because what is given cannot be measured. This baffles the technically oriented and they are inclined to question the reality of such giving. The technically oriented are unlikely to come to know such giving through participation in it, for to give yourself to such a technically oriented person is particularly risky; they are likely to take you in the wrong way. By their orientation the technically oriented thus prevent themselves from becoming aware of a whole realm of human relationships. A dissatisfaction with their system is the beginning of their release from the prison formed by their exclusive concern for technical means. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
