The resultant reduction in intimacy increases fear and timidity, and so the inclination to stay far away from the walls to intimacy. The walls become feared and regarded as dangerous---and walls are built to protect the naive against approaching the dangerous walls. In this way a series of walls are constructed via a feed-back loop which promotes increasing estrangement in a context of concern for propriety. At each step, intimacy is made to appear more dangerous, and being "cool" more acceptable and proper. People are accepted conditionally seek intimacy or approach the wall protecting people against intimacy. Such conditional acceptance promotes extremism, including the extremism of staying far away from the walls to intimacy. This in turn promotes rebellion, violence, and walls to protect against violence. In the end war breaks down the walls, and intimacy is restored in violent forms which disintegrate the perverse order of things. Only sacrificial love can break down the walls to intimacy, and so make gracious walls against violence. This is a miracle which does not make sense to the people who build most walls against intimacy. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
