Usually when people find their personal relationships unsatisfactory, they seek new ones in the sense of new participants. If the origin of their dissatisfaction is the type of relationship which they have experienced, changing the cast of characters in that type of personal relationship will not bring satisfaction. If this fact is not recognized, the person is likely to participate in a chain of unsatisfactory relationships of the same type. This may be the case for a variety of kinds of relationships: friendship, sexual, professional, political, religious, economic, marital, work, etc. People do not often seek new types of personal relationships, because to do so is often perceived as being full of risk. It is more comfortable to trade partners in known types of relationships, even if they continue to be ultimately unsatisfactory. It is easier to hope that the right partner will be found in the familiar type of personal relationship, than it is to risk entry into a new type of personal relationship. New types of personal relationships involve the development of new patterns of attitudes, approach, feeling, behavior, and self-regard. This is particularly difficult if self has not seen other people participate in the new type of personal relationship. Then imitation is not possible. Risky initiative and creativity is required to initiate such a new type of personal relationship. It is risky because society may regard the effort with suspicion, if not with alarm. New circumstances require the development of new types of personal relationships. Time makes ancient good uncouth. Each person comes to the moment to decide: to change the cast in a pattern of unsatisfactory personal relationships, or to seek to enter into new types of personal relationships. Decision is not merely an intellectual conclusion arrived at through logical processes. Decision involves the emotions, and is realized in action. New types of relationships are most creative when they are mutual, reciprocal, open; and focus upon the relationship, rather than only upon the participants. The participants may be created by their relationships, as well as creators of their relationships. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
