The decisions and actions are so dreaded that it is not possible to consider them in an adult manner so as to be free to pass value judgments regarding how helpful they might be, or not be. Even imagination and fantasy are restricted with respect to considering such decisions and actions. Such taboos may also receive sustenance through myths, traditions, rituals, laws, and banishments. The power of a taboo declines, however, as it uses the latter forms of sustenance in an explicit struggle to survive. Each profession has its cherished self-image along with its myths, traditions, rituals, laws, and forms of banishment. There is a tendency for professions to form collusions which put the nature of the profession beyond analysis. New questions which seek to put a self-serving profession into a broader perspective may be recited in subtle ways, but rarely in overt ways. An overt resistance to analysis of the profession is especially unlikely in an analytic profession. For this reason covert and subtle resistance to analysis is all the more likely, and so need to be anticipated by those within and with-out the profession. Extensive data collection about the profession may serve to make it appear that there are efforts to put it into perspective. Yet. so long as those analyses are made only by those with (or beholden to those within) the profession, they are devoid of real power. Those who are participants in a taboo may not have the power to cast it off, even after it has ceased to serve any useful purpose. All professions which profess to exist to serve others need from time to time to ask the others (outside the profession) to make a study of the extent to which the profession is being faithful to its calling. All too often, due to human finitude, there is a slippery descent into the mutual admiration and advancement society process with little awareness of relationships to others. Intelligence and sophistication are inadequate protections against these dangers. Participation in institutions which have nor been fragmented and dialogue with real persons who have not been fragmented are ways of avoiding entrapment in such a pit with neither mutual awareness nor mutual understanding of what is happening.
