Their success may be traced to the systematic efforts to develop a conscious awareness of the ways in which the various elements in an inter-active system affect each other over short and long periods of time. The effectiveness of natural scientists has been in part made possible by developments in instrumentation which has opened up the possibilities of measurements of very small and very large distances, and very short and very long time intervals. As scientists have become aware of processes which occur in these realms of measure they have been able to gain under-standings of and control over more processes. The various elements of the educational interactive system affect each other over short and long periods of time. The effectiveness of natural scientists will be greatly increased as they develop ways of opening up the possibilities of mutual awareness of the essential processes within the educational process --- processes which occur so rapidly as to be below the level of human awareness, or which occur so slowly that individual persons are unaware of the processes. Yet any systems analysis of the educational process of science education is difficult if not impossible without mutual awareness of these processes. At a different level of concern there are certain essential processes which may be left out of an inadequate systems analysis because of collusions, repressions, and/or narrowness of states of consciousness. Scientists who are accustomed to dealing in objective systems analysis are ill equipped to carry out a systems analysis of their own system. There are some essential uncertainties of which they may be unaware and to which they may be unable to relate. The improvement of science education will involve a comprehensive systems analysis of the whole process including the instinctive instantaneous emotional responses of real students, the life cycle of student- hood---parenthood---childhood---etc., and the processes (common to all persons) which psychologists and psychiatrists focus upon. Programs of science education which are compulsively narrow in dominant focus are programs which will have low survival value. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
