In some instances present rituals might be traced to former efforts which took account of cause and effect in accordance with a careful analysis of the nature of reality. The efforts might have represented the most helpful way of solving the real problem of the day. The procedures may, however, have become only traditional and so continued far past the days of their practical usefulness. They may however continue to serve the useful purpose of helping bond a community together in a common state of consciousness and so help maintain the viability of the community. In other instances present rituals might be traced to former efforts to develop traditional communal activities expressive of the mythology of the community, in order to help bond the community together in a common state of consciousness. Such rituals transmit and maintain the mythology and the community which embodies it. Such rituals may, however, outlive the mythologies and communities which they were designed to transmit and maintain. The mythology implicit in them may not be viable within the more modem states of consciousness generated by processes outside the full control of the community which embodied the mythology. These evolutionary processes are commonly present in the lives of religious communities. It may be that these evolutionary processes are also present in the lives of modern scientific and technical communities. Research, book publishing, journal publishing, professional meetings, and funding programs may be rituals. Some of these may in some cases be rituals which have outlived their days. On what basis will it be possible to make wise value judgments in this area? To some, rituals are beyond question; they become matters of ultimate concern. Only idolaters get caught in this trap, however. Others will be willing to consider the value of traditional procedures to those who make sacrifices to support the traditional procedures---whether the sacrifices be made willingly or unwillingly, consciously or unknowingly. Such persons will be willing to seek out-of-date unexamined assumptions and debilitating collusions. They will be free to seek ways of helping real persons. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
