The blinders restrict the awareness of the horse so that it is not diverted from the proper way. The blinders help the horse by eliminating some of the temptations to turn aside from the intended path. The tracks on which trains run assure that the train will follow the desired path, they restrict the motion of the train. The maintenance of restrictions of the sort indicated above insures the continuation of the desired process. The removal of the restrictions would be an invitation to going astray. For many years colleges have operated with restrictions designed to insure that its students will not go astray; almost as if students were horses or trains. By restricting students' choices through academic policies, colleges have sought to insure that the students would follow good paths of conduct. Such a overlooks the cessation of the restrictions upon graduation. No institution can exist without structure, and all structures impose restrictions upon those who participate within them. Only within structure is there real freedom. Thus, it is inevitable that colleges impose restrictions upon its students by virtue of the essential structures which define the character of the college. It does not follow, however, that the character of the college must include efforts to prevent student failure by the use of restrictive techniques without a fail-safe context. So long as colleges are dominated by intellectuals who seek to structure everything, including persons, so long will there be a tendency for restrictive techniques to be used to insure that there be no acknowledge learning through failure. So long as the good is known, it will be difficult to live in a fail-safe context in which all may learn through failures which point to the nature of reality, rather than to the particular character of the sub-culture in which the failure occurred. Colleges which seek to liberate students will fail if they desire to restrict their students' freedom to make mistakes, and experience the natural consequences without having to suffer contrived institutional violence as well.
