It is an exercise in futility for self to try to explain to other the nature of a reality which other can not perceived as real, even if only in imagination. It is likewise an exercise in futility for self to try to explain to other the nature of a reality if the self and other are not in dialogue --- perhaps due to being in differing states of consciousness. If either be the case, where must one start? It is not possible for the self and other to enter into a mutual understanding of reality until they have a mutual awareness of what is real to the self and other. Thus there must first be an effort towards dialogue in which self and other find each other pointing to realities in an effort to develop a mutual awareness of what is real to self and other. In setting priorities mutual awareness must come first, before mutual understanding. Too often science educators have unilaterally selected priorities which have focused on what they regarded as the relevant fundamentals of science. Tragically the selection criteria pertained almost exclusively to the structure of theoretical analysis --- without considering and caring for students' previous science relevant experiences and/or students' developmental stages. There has not been a mutual awareness of what is real to self and other. As a result there has been much scientific information dissemination but little communication, and even less dialogue between scientists and non-scientists. Intensified programs of scientific information dissemination will only add to the confusion which the past flood of information has generated. We need new questions which will shed light on the new problems and dilemmas which the flood of scientific information has generated. Traditional scientists do not have the freedom to articulate nor the freedom to choose to try to respond to these radically new questions. Such questions are more likely to be incarnate in the views and attitudes of attractive scientists who are free to enter into intimate relationships with non-scientists. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
