If the dominant focus is avoidance of natural or artificial sources of pain, then the motivations will be towards developing techniques to avoid the sources of pain. The sources of pain may well be in the emotional responses of others to certain patterns of behavior of the self. If the emotional responses of others be perverted, so also will be the behavior patterns of the self seeking to avoid pain. If others communicate to the self disparate messages, the self may find motivation and behavior fragmented in efforts to respond to the disparate messages which may be internalized with-out adult analysis. In frustration, motivation may decrease, and lethargy set in. If self discovers self unable to live up to expectations on repeated occasions, self may decide that there is no value in continuing efforts. Motivation declines. Self may internalize negative self-images leading to non-helpful behaviors. Thus the presence of unrealistic expectations is debilitating. If self is approached as an 'It' among objects---and rarely if ever as a 'Thou', self will become as an 'It' without volition and without motivation. Techniques of manipulation of others as 'It' undermine the possibility of them sustaining a hope and meaning in life---even if the techniques be designed to maintain "proper" standards of human behavior. Without hope and meaning in life there is little motivation to engage in helpful behavior, and a apparent urgent need to develop techniques to maintain standards of human behavior. The feed-back loop operates to intensify the dilemmas which the techniques were designed to solve. A self without motivation cannot through its own decisions and action generate motivation which it does not have. Any real motivation to be helpful is generated by others who accept the self with self's real dilemmas and through dialogue help develop mutual ways of resolving those dilemmas. In a fail-safe context motivation grows and the fulfillment of possibilities for creativity becomes possible. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
