If the instructional situation inhibits free interchange of views, then continuing renewal of the educational situation will be inhibited. When people do not feel free to share openly their views and feelings, people tend to fall into patterns of representing themselves to be, and thereby in part becoming, what they think or feel "others" expect them to be. In such a situation there is a fundamental lack of personal honesty and integrity. There has been a tradition to require students to observe academic honesty in American education. Efforts in this direction constitute an admission that our educational situation in general fails to encourage genuine total honesty between students and instructors. They often find themselves engaged in a game---wherein the students maneuver for high grades---and the instructor maneuvers for the maintenance standards with respect to the grade point average. In this situation motivations tend to direct attention away from increasing human growth to perfecting techniques of bureaucratic advancement and/or entrenchment. When the student and the instructor find themselves cast as combatants in a game with uncertain and/or changing rules, it is natural that honesty lose its position of respect in daily conversation. If this analysis points toward a situation which is in any sense real, it strongly suggests that we need to return to honesty as one of the essential touch-stones for testing the basic integrity of an educational program. We have become so accustomed to daily subtle dishonesty, that many people will fail to perceive the situation to which this analysis points. Therein is a measure of the seriousness of our current situation. Only a miracle can release us from an unrecognized prison. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
