Outside academia such a dual role would be regarded as a conflict of interest. Inside academia it generates perverted behavior. Plagiarism, cheating, cramming, academic dishonesty, snap courses, wash-out courses, and bureaucratic violence are only the more extreme forms of perversion generated by the conflict of interest. So long as the professor holds the unilateral power of the grade, there will be a major barrier to fully honest communication between students and professors, and academic dishonesty will continue to be a legitimate means of self-defense. How often do students feel that their professor is emotionally secure enough to accept constructive criticism without retaliation against the critic? Because of the certification requirement, many colleges adopted general degree distribution requirements to "insure" that their students are given a liberating education. For the same reason college deans have often tended to hire highly specialized professors, rather than liberally educated professors. Apparently the thinking has been that the degree requirements will guarantee that students will integrate the specialized lectures presented by un-liberated professors. Students who have difficulty with this system are failed in order to "maintain standards". The whole system might begin to be helpful and elicit respect---if college administrators placed far greater importance on hiring, promoting, and granting tenure to professors who are incarnations of a liberal arts education. Such professors would maintain standards through the quality of their service---rather than through the severity of their grading. The professors would have the emotional security which would make it possible for a tradition of mutual evaluation to evolve, so that an honest characterization of the effectiveness of the educational program for each student would become possible. There would be no guarantee of a liberal education, but it would occur far more often, and informative meaningful communications about the educational process would also occur more often.
