That theory is good which ensymbols the greatest amount of information. That scientist is good who is the incarnation of the greatest amount of information. That lecture is good that broadcasts the greatest amount of information in a most orderly manner. Not only is high information density good, but so also are order and the full control required to generate and maintain order. Within such a state of consciousness, group discussions involving real students are a frustration--- because the density of information-transmission is low--- and because the discussion is not likely to progress in an orderly manner, as it is hard to maintain full control of a real group discussion. Thus in many scientists' value systems group discussions are not highly valued. When viewed from a different perspective, different value judgments are the natural, and what is important is is not the density of information transmitted, but the amount of wisdom incarnated with carry-over value. Group discussions can play an essential role in creating contexts which will maximize the wisdom which is incarnated. However, it is not enough that there be people talking at each other within a group. For a group discussion to be helpful there must be real open and honest dialogue in the fail-safe context of authentic meeting with a common purpose. The richness of possibilities for information exchange within an effective group discussion---far transcend the possibilities of non-human information transmission systems and one-on-one human dialogue. If all those involved participate in intensive listening and timely contributions, the whole is much more than the sum of the parts. Participants can contribute what others seek but know not, and know not how to ask for. Of course, others may point to realities which are explicitly sought by self. Only through dialogue in honest group discussions can the full potentials of a learning community be fulfilled, for those who cease to be in honest dialogue cease to live. Clever techniques do not have the power of serving as substitutes for authentic meetings. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
