In the confusion of the flood of information there has been too little communication and even less dialogue. Information has been taken to the same as wisdom; and the peoples perish. Education too often has been reduced to the dissemination of information. Too often truths which do not yield to ensymbolment are denied, or even worse, ignored. Wisdom does not have the opportunity to develop under the chaotic flood of information about the past. The student learns that he is not o.k. because he can not accurately and without feeling store and retrieve on command the "important" bits of information. Technological means of information storage, retrieval, and dissemination lack the power of making value judgments which might bring the flood under control. Men who become part of the machine will in a similar way lack the power to bring the flood under control; for their fulfillment is in nothing other than the generation, retrieval, and dissemination of the flood of information. In earlier days mortals played a central role in societies' information management systems. Information, truths, and wisdom were incarnate or else were lost in preference for that which mortals regarded as more worthy of their finite attention. The flood was controlled through human finitude and mortality. Because of the central role of incarnation; information, truths, and wisdom were not so often confused with each other. The ancient information-management-system had a built-in evaluation-power-center in the soul of each element of the system. This is no longer true. Modern education has too often focused on technological means of information management in the absence of the more traditional incarnations of truth and wisdom within mortals who deal with finitude seriously.
