Through faith technocrats expect diversionary research to contribute to hope and meaning. Such faith is not real, and tends to blind people to the ways in which those who engage in diversionary research are used scientists. Because used scientists are kept busy on diversionary research they do not have time to receive broader perspectives and so can not participate consciously in helpful political action. The arationalists within their state of consciousness may well wish that the rationalists not engage in political action. Through collusion it appears that just as the arationalists are not competent to engage in scientific activity so also the rationalists who engage in diversionary research are not competent to engage in political activity. Each group is technocratic in its own way and unable to communicate effectively with others. The scientists do not mind being used so long as they are granted by their host. The politicians the parasitism of the scientists so long as the scientists do not mind the parasitism of the scientists so long as the scientists do not engage in decisions and actions which are effective political action. Political recommendations of scientific technical advisory committees are ignored as a matter of ritual. Only techniques are accepted. In this symbiosis there is little dialogue and thus little mutual awareness and even less mutual understanding. This symbiosis is able to persist through the myth of the value of all information. This myth persists with power only by virtue of the collusion of participants who deny finitude and so deal with finitude by ignoring it. Participants feel that in the search for knowledge they avoid making value judgements because any search for knowledge is valuable. Because of a lack of concern for the real problems of real persons, too often analysis is directed to solving academic puzzles rather than real problems. This is not to deny that many real problems are solved via solving academic puzzles. Pointing to realities such as this is a quite proper function of scientists. Likewise pointing to the realities of unmet human needs is a quite proper function of prophets. The suffering of real persons caught in a technocratic society with a crisis in affluence is a judgment upon the unfulfilled promises of pure scientists always working on academic puzzles and rarely if ever personally being touched by real problems of real persons in need.
