There is therein respect for each other's past and the human tendencies to relive and recall both the lessons and the emotional responses which were recorded in the past. While these are considered and respected, they are considered intelligently from an adult perspective rather than merely emotionally in a childish manner or authoritatively (but thoughtlessly) in an en- loco- parentis manner. Authentic meetings may be characterized by such terms "I'm O.K., and You're O.K." and "I-Thou". Yet such ensymbolments can not embody the reality of authentic meeting. The eternal reality of authentic meeting can be known only within authentic meeting. Without a mutual awareness of the reality of authentic meeting there can not be mutual understanding. Abstract words can not substitute for non-verbal communication and dialogue in authentic meeting. Through the reciprocal perceptions which characterize authentic meeting a person's creative potentials are set free. Therein persons become free to accept what others have to offer---without thereby acquiring an encumbering load of debts which demand payment. Therein persons become free to accept what others have to offer---without first achieving conformity to a set of standards which have been internalized as prerequisites to authentic meeting and the reciprocal perceptions and the giving and receiving which occur therein. Creative scientists can be creative because they do not fear the unknown. Their security originates in a preliminary mutual understanding of objective reality. Yet they may fear the unknowns of intimate relationships, particularly the lack of full control which characterizes such relationships. Thus, creative scientists may not be free to be helpful educers. It is for this reason that many scientists know much more than they can teach. The improvement of science instruction will require a transformation, if not a reversal, of this state of affairs. This will require asking new questions using what scientist may see as a strange language used by real students. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
