All communications depend upon the contexts defined- in-fact by the relationships-between-originators-and- apprehenders of meanings; where the relationships include: overt/explicit/articulated, formal, informal, tacit/implicit/unarticulated, behavioral, interactive, etc. No meaningful-communication is dependent ONLY upon SYMBOLS used to convey-meaning from the originator to the apprehender of the meaning-as-actually-received. The SYMBOLS used to convey-meaning include, but are not limited to: 1. Verbalized sounds, words, phrases, statements, questions, objections, yells, notes, etc. AND personal or communal --- actions, behaviors, habits, etc. 2. Traditional-Rituals: greetings, welcomes, social- graces, introductions, departures, letting-go, etc. 3. Formal-Procedures in personal and/or corporate meetings. 4. Formal-Agreements as in: Contracts, Covenants, Compacts, Bondings, Bindings, Marriages, Unions, etc. 5. What is: ABSENT, left-out, ignored, neglected, excommunicated, excluded, etc. --- including people, relationships, possessions, desires, hopes, feelings, emotions, expectations, yearnings, behaviors, actions, rites, rituals, etc. These to are SYMBOLS which often powerfully convey meanings that are received in ways which influence human perceptions and behaviors just as do what is more evidently PRESENT. 6. Whatever is systematically ABSENT from conversations within particular contexts --- compared to what is systematically PRESENT in fulfillment of traditional/dominant expectations. In the presence of difficulties with confused communications and/or absent communications --- it will NOT be helpful to focus in any EXCLUSIVE way upon any small FRACTION of the: intentions, discernments, receptions, articulations, symbols, participants, contexts or discerned-meanings. Discerned meanings depend upon the following kinds of contextual circumstances having to do with expectations: 1. An indirect communication was expected 2. Communication via sarcasm was expected. 3. Communication via indirection was expected. 4. Communication via innuendo was expected. 5. A communication of subservience was expected. 6. An objective scientific statement was expected. 7. A poetic observation was expected. 8. Tacit hints were expected. 9. Tacit demands were expected. 10. Helpful authenticity was definitely not expected. In the presence of some particular kinds of personal expectations it may be impossible for a person to communicate in a way which will engender any kind of satisfaction for anybody. Those entrapped in such a context may find that it is impossible to recognize their context without help from people they trust who are not trapped within their context. However, people who are trapped within such a context are unlikely to trust anybody who is not trapped within their particular kind of context. Only through some miraculous transition will communication become possible for them. The above kind of tragic-trap is more likely to imprison Domineering-People than True-Lovers. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in "Search for Honesty and Integrity" (On Being Yourself Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
