Neither personal nor communal integrity is a matter of conformity to any standard for "proper" assumptions, attitudes, beliefs, thoughts or behaviors. Integrity has to do with the parts of the whole working cooperatively together with other parts of the whole. Thus integrity is absent or crippled in the absence of demonstrations of: balance, honesty, mutuality, civility, hospitality, authenticity, openness, generosity, etc. on the part of the whole and its parts --- toward all parts of the whole. Thus integrity is difficult in the presence of: extremism, deception, unilateralism, attacks, defensiveness, pretentiousness, secrecy, greed, etc. --- for their presence is an indication of the absence of the virtues named above. The community as a-whole cannot demonstrate high levels of communal integrity if many members of the community demonstrate forms of callous disregard for the integrity of the community as a-whole, and/or for the integrities of the members of the community and/or their sub communities. To demonstrate integrities --- the above con- siderations need to be responded to in various ways which are appropriate to the various circumstances, situations and environments in which we find ourselves.
