If there cannot be a variety of ways of demonstrating personal and communal integrities; then once one has chosen a side to support --- all that one can do to be better than others on the chosen side, is to go to extremes of dedication, loyalty, sacrifice, etc. Thus dichotomous thinkers become extremists prone to terrorism. But few of us want to know that or say that with any degree of clarity, so we live out classic Greek tragedies which are motivated by commitments to very few unbalanced ideals, values, principles or goals.
