In the PRESENCE of PREOCCUPATIONS WITH ISSUES OF CONTROL over other people's inter-personal boundaries --- personal and communal integrity are threatened. It is not simple to articulate guidelines, rules and/or laws which say clearly and simply what boundaries should be respected and supported in inter-personal relationships. Even so, a few general principles may helpfully be suggested: 1. The greater is the power-disparity between two people the greater the care should be exercised to protect the vulnerable person against abuse by the more powerful person. 2. The greater is the power disparity between two persons the greater the care should be exercised to assure that what are ostensibly "mutual relationships" are in fact genuinely appreciated by the more vulnerable person. 3. The greater is the recent pattern of discrimination and/or prejudice against the minority groups with which the less powerful and/or more vulnerable person is associated --- the less powerful such a person should be considered, in relationship to these guidelines. 4. The following considerations bear significantly upon how much power a person has: age, education, economic status, birth-status, race, ethnic-group, positions held, fame, accomplishments, religious-affiliation, formal power structures and relationships, informal power structures and relationships. 5. The following considerations bear significantly upon how vulnerable a person may be: age, injuries, health, disabilities, sex, sexual-orientation, creativity, political involvements, affiliation with controversial causes, etc. 6. Extreme efforts to codify rules regarding boundaries between people who are involved intimately with each other --- may be efforts which are motivated by desires to be in control; as well as by desires to protect those who are vulnerable and powerless.
