In fact it is not simple to define what is and what is not pornography. Which of the following are necessary and sufficient conditions for something to be regarded as pornography? 1. Any accurate visual depiction of overt human sexual activity. 2. Any accurate visual depiction of overt human sexual activity which is abusive, unhealthy, dishonest, addictive, alienative or in some other way perverted. 3. Any accurate visual depiction of overt human sexual activity which takes place between persons who are not husband and wife. 4. Any accurate visual depiction of overt human sexual activity which takes place between persons who are husband and wife. 5. Any accurate visual depiction of overt human sexual activity which does not conform to some stated standards of what is permitted/sanctioned sexual activity. 6. Any of the above which is sold for the purpose of stimulating sexual excitement and activity on the part of the buyers at times and places of their own choosing. 7. Any accurate visual depiction of overt human sexual activity which accurate visual depiction is forbidden. The list of possibilities may be extended by replacing in each of the above the word "accurate" with the word "inaccurate" wherever it occurs. In a general sense the following questions may be framed about the definition of pornography and how it is regarded: 1. Of what relevance is the quality of the intimate relationships between the participants in the sexual activity --- perhaps including the photographer(s) and/or artist(s)? 2. Of what relevance is the scope of sexual activity which is depicted? 3. Of what relevance is the accuracy of the depiction of the sexual activity? 4. Of what relevance is the way in which the viewer relates to the visual depictions? 5. Does pornography exist as an objective reality, or is it a reflexive reality which depends upon the person(s) reflecting upon the depictions and responding to it in reflexive sexual ways? 6. Is what is objected to honesty about unhealthy human sexual activity? 7. Is what is objected to honesty about healthy human sexual activity? 8. Might there be some collusive games of human self-deception which are being protected in considerations of pornography and attempts to prevent the distribution of pornography? 9. What kinds of visual depictions of human sexual activity are truly disintegrative of personal and communal integrity; prone to lead to unhealthy personal and communal relationships? 10. How can we transcend ineffective ways of responding to the creation and distribution of visual depictions of human sexual activity; and develop more helpful ways of responding to the creation and distribution of visual depictions of humane sexual activity?
