A gun responds to pulling the trigger 2. Electronic equipment responds to pushing a button 3. A computer responds to pressing a key 4. A computer program responds to a subroutine call 5. A trained animal responds to a Pavlovian stimulus Responses which we take to be essentially reasonable, logical, cognitive, sensible and/or responsible --- often are not. Different people in different cultures, communities, neighborhoods, families, churches, and circumstances have been "programmed" differently. To deal with all different kinds of people we need to deal openly and honestly with the fact that different people have been "programmed" differently --- and not necessarily reasonably, logically, cognitively, sensibly or responsibly. People respond differently to various sexual stimuli, cognitive stimuli, threats, invitations, demonstrations, role models, rules, regulations, proscriptions, prescriptions, etc. Only fools expect different people to respond in standard ways to each possible stimulus. Only fools blame different people for responding differently to each possible stimulus. Part of being a responsible person is to give due consideration to the variety of ways in which different people are likely to respond to each possible stimulus --- and to behave in light of that due consideration.
