Usually their compulsive preoccupation is disintegrative of self, others, and communities---even though the intent is implicitly to work for personal and communal integrity. The compulsions are tragically misguided. We will do well to recognize the many and diverse forms of the compulsions. People attempt to save themselves by engaging in meritorious: works, giving, study, sacrifice, prayer, rituals, etc. They act as if their salvation depends upon their personal "achievements" and the quality of their "being". In their view, salvation is a "do-it-yourself" thing. Such people may be religious, pious, secular, agnostics, etc. Often they show little awareness of communal realities or possibilities. They focus little upon the quality of inter-personal relationships or communications. They may differ in regards to the details of what is regarded as meritorious or worthy of condemnations. Yet, they agree that salvation is individualistic. Some people specialize in making themselves look good. They seek to achieve self-righteousness in one way or another: through distinctively high standards which they, and only they, can meet; through distinctively low standards which they can meet; through large doses of "humility" which cry for affirmations from others through self-deprecations; through the pretense that they have met agreed-to-standards; and through the wearing of masks. It is the "appearance" which they feel must count. Some people specialize in making others look bad---so that by comparison they look good. They focus their attention upon others and their failures to have high standards and/or their failures to live up to high standards. By being "good" judges of others --- they try to look "good" in their own eyes. Those who can recognize and call attention to evil must be good; for the devil would not have his agents expose his own, would he? Few people seem to be willing to acknowledge that people who truly know the nature of salvation are not preoccupied with salvation---in any way. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
