The contrasts may be paired one with another---but at the same time the contrasting pairs may be oriented so that they are all "in parallel" contrasts if their orientations are "in parallel". When so oriented---the poles which are on one side are naturally associated with each other; and are in contrast with the poles which are on the "other" side. Absences are just as significant as are parallel appearances. Absences are harder to recognize than are parallel appearances; for to recognize an absence you must expect a presence first. If you are unaware of what might be present you cannot be aware of its absence. Thus is it easier to look for and recognize parallel appearances than to look for and recognize unexpected absences. Even so, it is good to learn to look for "unexpected absences" by looking for the absences of those realities which are listed above in contrast to what is noted as being present. We can recognize unexpected absences by having a tool by which to recognize that which might be present in contrast to what is present and is easily recognized. The above listing of polarized pairs can make it easier to recognize correlated opposites and so to look for "unexpected" absences which are portents of disintegration of persons and communities. If we are to promote both personal and communal integrity we must learn to recognize portents of disintegration of persons and communities---and to serve to correct for unexpected absences in whatever ways we may be able to do so.
