In salvation we learn that: Our freedom from the threat of total abandonment does not depend upon who we are, who we appear to be, who we try to control; or upon what we do, fail to do, believe, fail to believe, experience, perceive, understand, know, feel, think, want, or desire. We can safely rest from our disintegrative fears of the possibility of total abandonment. People who are truly near, dear and important to us will stay with us through thick and thin, through success and failure, through confidence and doubt, through fulfillment of expectations, and through our unique non- conformity. We do not have to do violence to our unique integrity to assure that we will not be abandoned by true friends. True faith is not achieved by trying to believe statements that run counter to our own unique experiences. There are healthy people near and dear to us who will not totally abandon us in response to any of their own desires, ideals, duties, responsibilities or inclinations. There are healthy people who are committed to providing for us a healthy context where we can be safely vulnerable. Our parents were imperfect, had limitations and were victims---just as we are. It is o.k. for us to accept our parents' imperfections, limitations, and victim nature. God who created the universe is not going to abandon us as did our imperfect parents who were not there for us when we needed them most. It is safe to stop pretending to be something other than who we really are. We can be true to ourselves and others in the secure knowledge that we will not be abandoned when we are true to ourselves and others. We do not have to be dishonest or violent to avoid abandonment. We cannot achieve our own salvation through any pattern of conformity, works, beliefs, doctrines, rituals, technologies, fixes, avoidances, ignorance, pretending, or dishonesty. We cannot achieve our own salvation through any pattern of efforts to deceive, control, manipulate, influence or otherwise get people or God to conform to fulfill our wishes, desires or needs. Salvation is a gift which is given to us freely without conditions, that we receive freely without conditions, and that we offer/give to each other freely without conditions. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
