Addicts and their codependents often have the arrogance to claim that they speak by God's commission and with God's authority to control us. All too often we are tragically seduced by our expectations that we can achieve exclusive security for ourselves through the exercise of unilateral control. We are seduced by our dishonest hopes that our defensive measures will achieve for us, at the expense of others, the kind of security which we seek. Too rarely do we recognize that true security is to be found in the non-calculated gifts we give each to other; gifts of the freedom to be safely vulnerable---given upon God's prompting of our liberated hearts. While God seeks to liberate us from restrictive controls by writing his laws of love upon our hearts --- so we can respond to his creative promptings; in contrast collusive addicts and their codependent supporters seek to control us through the enforcement of their laws to restrict our freedoms so we will appear to conform to their expectations. It is our choice to decide whom to trust. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
