We gain no advantage by participating in collusive games of mutual self deception according to which we can control processes and relationships which are beyond our control because of our limitations. No level of sophistication, belief, conviction, dedication, effort, or sacrifice on our part can lead to our achievement of the control of the processes and relationships which we cannot control because of our limitations. Denying our limitations does not help us to transcend our limitations. We are able to deal wisely with processes and relationships over which we cannot have control only when we are open and honest about our inability to have control over them. We are likely to perpetuate tragic behavior patterns if we refuse to be open and honest about our inability to have control over such processes and relationships. Often the best we can do in the face of an event or development is to honestly mourn the fact that the event or development occurred. In such a situation, to try to avoid mourning the fact, leads to personal and communal disintegration; and is not better than mourning. We need to learn how to be open and honest about how and why mourning is often the best thing to do; rather than a concession in the sense of a failure. To often we feel a sense of responsibility to try to control processes and relationships which we cannot control. When we do so we are being mislead by disintegrative ideals and values which do not properly acknowledge our true limitations. Such disintegrative ideals and values are not worthy of our respect, support, sacrifices or worship. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
