Is it ALWAYS good to engage in purpose-full behavior? If it is ALWAYS good to engage in purpose-full behavior, then it is NEVER good to engage in purpose-less behavior; and when we find ourselves engaging in (or having engaged in, or likely to engage in) purpose-less behavior we will feel a great need to rationalize the other-wise purpose- less behavior. The need to rationalize may be so great that there is no felt need for the rationalization to: make sense, be honest, have integrity, or be rooted in our own actual experiences. If it is ALWAYS good to engage in purpose-full behavior, then all behavior should be engaged in with an intended purpose in mind, a goal, a reason, a logic; which should exist prior to entering into the behavior. Behavior should then be controlled by pre-existent purposes, goals, reasons, and logic. The behavior should be chosen as a means to fulfill the pre-existent purposes, goals, reasons, and logic---in keeping with an understanding of what behaviors will fulfill, and what behaviors will not fulfill. This requires a high level of knowledge of cause and effect operating in complex human relationships which are essentially reflexive. In the absence of a high level of knowledge of cause and effect operating in complex human relationships which are essentially reflexive, it makes no sense to always engage in purpose-full behavior. How can we with confidence chose which behaviors to engage in to fulfill our pre-existent purposes, goals, reasons, and logic---in the absence of such a high level of knowledge and understanding suited to prediction, manipulation and control? If we ourselves do not know all that we need to know to always engage in purpose-full behavior, perhaps some other persons are expert enough to supply our need to know! Maybe we can turn to experts to lead and guide us in always engaging in purpose-full behavior. Perhaps they will have good purposes, goals, reasons, and logic upon which we can rely with complete confidence to guide us in our otherwise uninformed ways. There must be experts available who will be willing to lead us and save us from the burden of knowing all that needs to be known to always engage in purpose-full behavior. This bears some careful consideration! (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
