We cannot achieve divine perfection through human efforts to be in control. Divine perfection is not a human achievement; it is a divine gift which we may accept or reject, but we cannot achieve it through our efforts to be in control of our imperfections, our faults, or our flaws. If we try to achieve perfection, we try to perfect the ideals and values in terms of which we define perfection; for how can we be perfect in the absence of perfect standards? Our efforts to perfect our standards of judgment undermine our efforts to live up to our standards. In our resultant insecurity we judge ourselves and each other harshly, generate alienation, occasion more mistakes and heighten our inability to learn from our mistakes. Efforts to try to achieve perfection are usually counter-productive. We will do better to try to understand our compulsions to try to be perfect, and to try to avoid alienative judgments. We will do well to seek to understand each other as we really are. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
