If we choose to approach and apprehend everything as if every thing is just a thing which is neither holy nor mysterious; then most likely we will find every thing to be just a thing which is neither holy nor mysterious---yet we may not succeed in avoiding the holy and mysterious. If we seek to discover, collect and control which things, places, words, and people are inherently holy and mysterious quite apart from how we approach and apprehend them; then we are unlikely to find ourselves truly in the presence of the Holy Spirit. We cannot collect holy things, places, words and/or people. That which is truly holy and mysterious does not yield to manipulative procedures such as collection, ownership, possession, or control. Attempting to collect, own, possess or control will often dismiss the holy and mysterious aspects of our relationships with things, places, words and people. Holiness and mystery most often have to do with relationships; rather than with things, places, words and people. We are participants in holy and mysterious relationships which are holy and mysterious in large part through the nature of our participation and response to whatever we encounter within the relationship. Yet, we cannot control that which is holy and mysterious; and we may encounter that which is holy and mysterious in spite of our efforts to control our participation and response. If we seek that which is holy and mysterious as a tool or a fix which will serve our purposes---we are likely to find that all that is holy and mysterious will evade our efforts to be in control. If we seek to run from that which is holy and mysterious to escape from its presence and demanding relationships---we are likely to be followed by the Hound of Heaven from whose presence we find we cannot escape. When we encounter that which is holy and mysterious, it is always within the context of a relationship which is reflexive, intimately involving us. That which is holy and mysterious is never a reality which is detached and objective; never separated from us. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
